What You Should Know About Private Adoptions

Anyone who wants to adopt a child will have to learn a lot about the adoption process. There are different types of adoptions, including private adoptions. A private adoption means you are dealing directly with the birth parent or parents rather than an adoption agency. The parental rights are transferred from the birth parent to the adoptive parent directly. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this type of adoption.

One advantage is that both the birth parents and adoptive parents retain more control over the process. You won't have to adhere to an agency's particular set of rules regarding the procedure and can enjoy more freedom with how and when the adoption takes place. Because the birth parents get to have more contact with you, they get to find out more about you and vice versa. This may offer them more confidence when it comes to the adoption. Another advantage is that you are often able to get your newborn faster than you would with an agency, allowing for immediate parent-child bonding. Experts agree bonding during the moments after birth is important for both the baby and the parent, even if they are an adoptive parent.

Of course, there are disadvantages to consider as well. One potential disadvantage is price. Most agencies have fixed prices, while private adoptions do not. This means that the costs may be substantially more, or less, than an agency would charge you. Some people find the price variance a downside. Less selection is another potential disadvantage to adopting privately. You are not able to choose gender or age as you may be able to do with an agency. Finally, there is always the chance that the birth mother will change her mind before the adoption is able to go through.

If you are planning to adopt a child, you should consider both agency and private adoptions. You will also decide if you want to adopt domestically or internationally. Most all private adoptions are domestic in nature. This means you adopt a child from your home country. Adopting within your own home state can reduce costs and make the entire process a lot more convenient as well. Be advised you should always retain the services of a skilled adoption attorney before beginning the adoption process.
